I didn't really have any friends my age who enjoy going out to pubs, so that eliminated one of the most useful ways of finding nearby pubs. Word-of-mouth is always one of the best ways to learn about new places and new things because you have the advantage of hearing about them from people who have already experienced it and enjoyed it. That increases the likelihood that you would enjoy yourself at a particular place, especially if you can rely on your friends' judgment. So, like most of America, I was forced to find a pub near me by going online.

It could hardly be any easier. Literally, all you have to do is type in 'pubs near me' on your browser, and watch the page fill up with possible venues. Because your computer knows where you live, you are instantly presented with all those businesses which have previously registered with Google, for the purpose of having their listings presented to users in searches just like this one. When I did this myself, I instantly got a screen with about thirty nearby pubs, along with images of food and beverages served, addresses, business hours, and even menus of what they serve.

Probably the most useful feature though, from all this information, is the user reviews. I'm not sure if all these reviews are legitimately written by people who have visited these venues, but after reading a few, I decided that they sounded legitimate enough and that I could trust them. So I checked out two or three pubs which got really good reviews, one which was popular because of their friendly service, one which served great pub food, and another one where there was a great mixologist who was constantly experimenting with new and exciting drinks.

By the end of that week, I had already checked out all three places, and I had a good experience at each one of them. So for me at least, it kind of proved the process, and I was glad that I had searched for a new pub and chosen some which had outstanding user reviews. I've mentioned these places to my friends, and how I found them, and they were all impressed that I had discovered these pubs without the help of anyone else.

Making new friends

Of those three pubs, I have kind of settled on one as my new favorite hangout, and I expect that's the one I'll be going to most often, because I've discovered that they play my favorite kind of music as well, which is classic rock 'n roll. I've also made a couple new friends from the people who are more or fewer regulars at my new favorite pub, and I'm super glad about that because I don't have a lot of friends. I think I could now serve as somebody's friend who advises them on how to find a 'pub near me', so they don't even have to bother going through the search like I did. Next time I need to find a pub near me, I'll have a couple friends to check with.
